Embroidery: Spy Girl

Hello everyone! I just completed another embroidery called 'Spy Girl'. I stitched the outline in two strands of a dark brown thread and then used one strand for the pattern detail in the hair. The red satin stitch collar uses two strands of thread as does the random line pattern on the skirt. The grey french knots in the background use three strands of thread. As expected, it was the intricate pattern of the hair that took the longest time to complete. I had considered using a design on the shirt as well but i thought it might end up looking a bit overkill so i've left it for the moment, but might go back to it again in the future.

Detailed shots of the embroidery and the sketchbook drawing that inspired it...

Paperfolk Loves... Miki Sato

Miki Sato hails from Ontario, Canada and dabbles in paper illustrations, ink drawings and comics to name a few. I was incredibly impressed with all of her art works but especially drawn to her paper craft. I love the whimsical scenes and also the colour palette. I can actually see every single one of these transferring well to embroidery which is probably another big tick for me!

Check out the full catalogue of work on her website. In the meantime, here are a few works....

Embroidery

A new embroidery that I finished off today! This was inspired by one of my sketchbook drawings (see below). I used a dark brown thread because i'm finding that black is too harsh against the white linen i'm using at the moment. The outline of the character uses two strands but the details on the antlers and jumper use one strand of thread.

Monday Musings... Marlene Dumas

South African artist, Marlene Dumas, has recently opened a new exhibition, The Image as Burden, at the Tate Modern. I have been a big fan of her work since art school because I always admired her cropped portraits that focus attention on the face. I also read that she paints from secondary images (photographs etc) which I found quite rebellious when we were always told of the importance of painting from life. I'll hopefully get to the show in the coming months... let me know what you think if you manage to make it along!

Monday Musings... Electric Gardens

The amazing electric gardens is happening in Botanic Gardens Glasgow. The gardens will come to life with lighting displays and projections as well as performances. I think it looks pretty amazing and i love the idea of spaces being used well at night time. It's the first time the event is being run so fingers crossed it all goes well! Find out more on the Botanics website.
